@Giants |
The big day is here! Forget the formalities. Let's just get right into the picks, shall we?:
1. Los Angeles Rams: Jared Goff, QB, California
Goff might not be a sure thing, - no prospect is - but he's the most pro-ready QB in the draft and should be ready to take the keys to the Rams' new kingdom.
2. Philadelphia Eagles: Carson Wentz, QB, North Dakota St.
The Eagles big trade pays off as they get the guy they want. They would be happy with either Wentz or Goff, but Wentz is THE guy for them. Don't believe it? - Then explain to me why Eagles owner, Jeffry Lurie, took an impromptu trip to North Dakota.
3. San Diego Chargers: Ronnie Stanley, OT, Notre Dame
The Chargers get the top tackle to protect the franchise, Phillip Rivers. Laremy Tunsil's recent alleged assault pretty much sealed that if it's a tackle, it will be Stanley.
Mock 5.0: Jalen Ramsey, CB/S, Florida St.
4. Dallas Cowboys: Jalen Ramsey, CB/S, Florida St.
The Cowboys biggest need matches the best player on the board. Ramsey would be an absolute score for the folks in Jerry World and would instantly improve the Cowboys secondary.
Mock 5.0: Joey Bosa, EDGE, Ohio St.
5. Jacksonville Jaguars: Joey Bosa, EDGE, Ohio St.
The Jags have been as tight-lipped as anyone in this draft, but one thing that's not a secret is that they want to improve their defense. Bosa makes the most sense here with Ramsey off the board.
Mock 5.0: DeForest Buckner, DE/DT, Oregon
6. Baltimore Ravens: Laremy Tunsil, OT, Ole Miss
Newsome goes best player available here and gets what could be a big steal.
Mock 5.0: Myles Jack, LB, UCLA
7. San Fransisco 49ers: DeForest Buckner, DE/DT, Oregon
Chip Kelly goes out and gets the monster that he recruited to Oregon to help retool his new defensive line.
Mock 5.0: Laremy Tunsil, OT, Ole Miss
8. Cleveland Browns: Ezekiel Elliott, RB, Ohio St.
Trade or no trade, I think Elliott comes off the board at No. 8. Will be one of the most complete backs in the league, no matter what team he's on.
Mock 5.0: Ronnie Stanley, OT, Notre Dame
9. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Leonard Floyd, LB, Georgia
Floyd continues to climb the board, even on Draft Day. He will be able to cover alongside Lavonte David or put his hand in the dirt for Mike Smith's defense.
Mock 5.0: Vernon Hargreaves III, CB, Florida
10. New York Giants: Jack Conklin, OT, Michigan St.
Conklin likely won't make it out of the top 10, and his mauler style fits the precedent the Giants set last year by taking Ereck Flowers. In the end, it will always be BEST AVAILABLE for Reese.
Mock 5.0: Leonard Floyd, LB, Georgia
11. Chicago Bears: Vernon Hargreaves III, CB, Florida
John Fox is a defense-first coach, and Hargreaves fits what the Bears are looking for in their secondary. Good value here.
Mock 5.0: Sheldon Rankins, DT, Louisville
12. New Orleans Saints: Sheldon Rankins, DT, Louisville
Rankins can be a disruptive force in both the passing and run game, especially playing alongside Cameron Jordan.
Mock 5.0: Kevin Dodd, EDGE, Clemson
13. Miami Dolphins: Myles Jack, LB, UCLA
The Dolphins may not get Elliott, but one of the most talented players in the draft falls to them at 13. At this point, a fall like this wouldn't be surprising for Jack.
Mock 5.0: Ezekiel Elliot, RB, Ohio St.
14. Oakland Raiders: William Jackson III, CB, Houston
The Raiders just missed out on Jack, but Jackson is a nice consolation. WJ3 is a physical cover corner that will elevate the skill-level of the Raiders secondary from Day 1.
15. Tennessee Titans: Taylor Decker, OT, Ohio St.
Decker may not have the clout that Conklin has going into the draft, but he should get the job done for the Titans - that job, of course, being protecting Marcus Mariota.
Mock 5.0: Jack Conklin, OT, Michigan St.
16. Detroit Lions: Jarran Reed, DT, Alabama
In Reed, the Lions get a proven run-stuffer with solid potential as a pass rusher to help vill the void left by the departures of Suh and Fairley.
17. Atlanta Falcons: Shaq Lawson, EDGE, Clemson
Lawson's powerful frame and play style would be a nice complement to the sleek, athletic style of fellow Clemson Tiger and lat year's first round pick, Vic Beasley.
18. Indianapolis Colts: Ryan Kelly, C, Alabama
Ryan Kelly is as close to a sure thing as you will get in this draft, which is good because the Colts could use some assurance that Andrew Luck won't end up on his back as many times as he has in past years.
Mock 5.0: Taylor Decker, OT, Ohio St.
19. Buffalo Bills: Vernon Butler, DT, Louisiana Tech.
Butler's athleticism, frame, and ability to play anywhere along the line have led to comparisons to Muhammad Wilkerson. Now who was it that drafted Muhammad Wilkerson back in 2011? Hmmmmm....
20. New York Jets: Kevin Dodd, EDGE, Clemson
Todd Bowles is itching to get some pass rushers on this team, and though Dodd is somewhat unproven, he has shown an ability to get into the backfield with regularity, which will help when it comes time to play the Patriots.
Mock 5.0: Noah Spence, EDGE, Eastern Kentucky
21. Washington Redskins: A'Shawn Robinson, DT/DE, Alabama
A'Shawn Robinson would fit right in as a 3-4 DE for the 'Skins. Robinson needs some work as a pass rusher, but his pure power will make him an impactful run-stuffer from the start.
22. Houston Texans: Corey Coleman, WR, Baylor
Corey Coleman's speed and agility will allow him separate and would let Brock Osweiler show off his ability to sling the ball downfield, providing a nice complement to Hopkins.
23. Minnesota Vikings: Josh Doctson, WR, TCU
Teddy Bridgewater could use a receiver that will go up and get the ball in tight coverage. Josh Doctson is a 6'2" hands-catcher that would help Bridgewater make those tough throws into the teeth of a defense, especially in the red zone.
24. Cincinnati Bengals: Laquon Treadwell, WR, Ole Miss
The Bengals keep the receiver run going! In this scenario, they fill that space left by Jones and Sanu with the prospect many scouts see as the best receiver in the class. If Treadwell falls, I don't expect him to make it past this pick.
25. Pittsburgh Steelers: Eli Apple, CB, Ohio State
Apple is still the pick here. He may be raw, but what he has shown already will get a team like the Steelers excited to get to work with him on fine-tuning his craft.
26. Seattle Seahawks: Chris Jones, DT, Mississippi St.
Jones' upside and scheme fit in Seattle lands him as the potential replacement for nine-year Seahawk, Brandon Mebane.
27. Green Bay Packers: Reggie Ragland, LB, Alabama
The move back to the outside by Clay Matthews - a smart move, might I add - leaves the Pack in strong need of an inside linebacker. Fortunately, the best inside linebacker is still on the board, a scenario that Green Bay would love to see happen tonight.
28. Kansas City Chiefs: Artie Burns, CB, Miami (FL)
The Chiefs take a chance on another "undisciplined" corner, hope they can get the most out of him and create the best young 1-2 punch at corner in the league.
29. Arizona Cardinals: Jihad Ward, DE, Illinois
The Cardinals pick another lesser known player in the first round - shocker. Ward needs work, but this team has shown a willingness to help develop players, and it's paid off.
Mock 5.0: Ryan Kelly, C, Alabama
30. Carolina Panthers: Emmanuel Ogbah, EDGE, Oklahoma St.
Carolina's scheme is a nice fit for Ogbah and may be able to draw more out of him than any other team's.
31. Denver Broncos: Robert Nkemdiche, DT/DE, Ole Miss
Can Elway and the Broncos snag another troubled player and get him to focus on the game? If Nkemdiche follows Shane Ray's lead, the Broncos could be looking at the steal of the draft.
**NOTE: The draft only has 31 picks because the New England Patriots were stripped of their 2016 first round pick.
Best players left:
Paxton Lynch (QB): I feel that I need to explain this. I do not account for any trading (though I will be publishing a draft trade special very soon). If the draft order stays as is, I don't expect to see Lynch in the first round. However, I don't expect the draft order to stay as is; it's simply too uncertain to be able to be remotely accurate in predicting draft trades.
Darron Lee (LB), Karl Joseph (S), Germain Ifedi (OT), Andrew Billings (DT/NT)
